Graphics-Only Emails: Whose Email Marketing Is It?

Posted on Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Josh

It's time for your favorite blog-driven game show: whose email marketing is it? Thanks to marketers still using graphic-only emails, we still have plenty of opportunities for you to guess the marketer and what they intended for you to see if the end user has images turned off in their email client.

Of course, you should NEVER put together graphic-only emails as it's a terrible practice that could get your emails caught in a spam folder, in addition to the fact that it's an incredibly lazy practice that leads to horrendous looking emails if someone has images disabled. The ratio is simple: 70% text and 30% images. If you can't figure this out, ask us for help.

Now then, here's the email in all of its gray box splendor: So who could it be? Some clues: they are having a Father's Day sale and giving 50% off and free shipping.

Nothing yet? Could be anybody? Let's pull back the curtain.

Yes, that's right: XM Radio did this fantastic work of email design (note that I left out the full legal text on the images-disabled example above). When you dissect this a bit, there is no reason this couldn't be a perfectly functioning email that fit the appropriate ratios. I don't get this. They are a major brand and have some coin to spend on development, so why don't they figure this out?
